Mole National Park

A Top Tourist Attraction In Ghana

Ghana Tourism And Travel    Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park

Ghana is often regarded as the most welcoming country in Africa, making it an excellent destination for those embarking on their first African adventure. Mole National Park, the largest in Ghana, spans over 4,577 square kilometers. However, only a small portion of this vast reserve is open to visitors, who come to enjoy the diverse wildlife and the tranquil atmosphere. The best time to explore is during the dry season, from September to April, as access becomes challenging in the rainy months and animals are harder to spot when not gathered around the limited water sources.

For thrill-seekers, embarking on a safari is the ultimate vacation, allowing you to connect intimately with nature. For explorers, it's a unique chance to delve into African traditions and witness some of the planet's most remarkable natural wonders. However, safaris often come with a hefty price tag, and you've likely already invested heavily in airfare. Mole National Park, located in Ghana's northern region, offers a budget-friendly alternative to the typical, tourist-heavy safari experiences, providing a more secluded adventure.

Mole National Park3

This park is not only affordable, but it also promises sightings of savannah wildlife. It's renowned for its elephant population, boasting a herd exceeding 800 individuals. You'll also encounter rare monkey species, baboons, antelopes, and warthogs, and there's even a possibility of spotting a lion pride. With the combined expenses of entrance tickets, lodging, gratuities, and the mandatory personal armed ranger to accompany you in the park, the cost of this safari escapade is approximately $20 per person.

Despite its distant location, which can be as far as a seven-hour drive from Accra, Mole National Park is readily reachable from any major city in Ghana. Visitors have the option of renting a car in Accra or taking an STC bus available in all regional capitals.

For lodging, there is a stylish hotel within the park called Mole Hotel. This hotel features a swimming pool, a dining area offering both Western and Ghanaian cuisine, and bike rentals. The cost varies, depending on whether you opt for a single, double, or suite room. Each room is equipped with electricity, a bathroom, a fan or air conditioning, and balconies offering views of the lower savannah valley.

Many people tend to visit eastern or southern Africa, often overlooking West Africa. The next time you travel to Ghana, I strongly suggest visiting Mole National Park.

Mole National Park7

Mole National Park (MNP) stands as Ghana's inaugural and most expansive national park and wildlife sanctuary. It represents the most extensive biologically varied savannah ecosystem in the country and is home to Ghana’s largest group of savannah African Elephants (Loxodonta africana africana), which are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN red list.

The park also shelters other significant large fauna, such as the Buffalo (Syncerus caffer), Roan Antelope (Hippotragus equinus), Lion (Panthera leo), which is also marked as Vulnerable on the IUCN red list, and Leopard (Panthera pardus), classified as Near Threatened.

Additionally, MNP is a habitat for two unique species of sedge (Kyllinga echinata and Ancilema setiferum var. pallidiciliatum) and three plant species that are exclusive to Ghana (Gongronema obscurum, Phionacme vignei, and Phinopterys angustifolia). The park boasts a record of 314 bird species, the highest number documented at any location in Ghana, and hosts 29 of the 37 bird species restricted to the Sudan-Guinea savannah biome.

Declared an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International, MNP is also considered for future recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Moreover, the communal landscapes surrounding the reserve are among the last remaining forests in the northern and upper regions of Ghana.

Mole National Park5

Covering an expanse of 4,577 square kilometers, MNP is predominantly located within the West Gonja District in Ghana's Northern Region. It falls within the WWF Eco-region known as 'Tropical and Subtropical Grasslands, Savannahs and Shrublands'.

MNP is a relatively pristine guinea savannah habitat characterized by open savannah woodlands and is recognized as Ghana's largest biologically diverse savannah ecosystem. It harbors the largest concentration of savannah African Elephants and boasts a wealth of large wildlife, including Buffalo, Roan Antelope, Lion, and Leopard. The park is home to over 93 mammal species, 315 avian species, 9 amphibians, 33 reptiles, and 5 unique butterfly species. In addition to the open savannah woodlands, MNP encompasses riverine forests, floodplain grasslands, and marshes. Significant features of the park also include pools and wetland zones, waterfalls cascading down the Koukori escarpments, and the remnants of ancient settlements.

For many travelers, reaching Mole is quite a journey, often requiring a 15-hour drive from Accra, the capital, and that's if you have private transport! Using public transportation will extend the trip considerably longer.

Up until not long ago, Mole had just one lodging choice: the Mole Motel. Built in the 1960s, it offers an affordable stay with dormitories, a swimming pool, a bar, and a friendly atmosphere for backpackers. A recent addition to the area is the Zaina Lodge, a high-end option featuring an infinity pool, teak loungers under canvas shades, and luxurious tented chalets. Both accommodations are located atop the escarpment that cuts through the park, providing breathtaking views over vast expanses of forest, savannah, and grasslands. They also have the advantage of being near watering holes where animals, especially elephants, frequently gather.

No matter where you choose to stay, waking up to the sounds of the savannah, looking out over miles of untouched African landscape, experiencing close encounters with nature, and enjoying the warmth of Ghanaian hospitality will bring tranquility and a sense of well-being.
